Context Is the New Competitive Advantage

"Your competitors can buy the same AI you can. They can't buy the years of context already sitting inside your business."

We are fortunate to spend a lot of our time at the frontier of what AI can do.

That's not always as exciting as it sounds.

Some of what we see turns out to be noise. Some of it is impressive but not particularly useful. And sometimes there is a lot of work between seeing what is possible and getting any real value from it.

But every now and then, it all comes together. We've just had one of those moments inside GenerationAI.

We have spent a long time building our own information environment so AI agents can navigate it. The structure, the rules, the permissions and the way people work with their own agents. It hasn't happened overnight, and we are still learning.

Then we brought a new partner into the business. We gave them their own AI agent, plugged it into the environment and watched what happened.

Need a document? It can find it. Need some background on an area of the business you've never worked in? It can go and get it. Don't know where something lives? Increasingly, it doesn't matter.

The normal barrier of joining a business and not knowing where everything is, who knows what or what happened before you arrived starts disappearing remarkably quickly.

That was the penny-drop moment for me.

The breakthrough isn't that AI suddenly knows everything about your business. It is that AI can reach what your business already knows.

And that changes the value of all the information we have spent years accumulating.

Most businesses have some version of the same problem. “Where's that bloody document?”. The latest policy is somewhere in SharePoint. There are three versions of the proposal. Someone saved the template in their personal folder. Sarah knows where something is because she has been there for eight years.

It sort of works because humans compensate for the mess. We learn where things live. We know who to ask. We know that the document called FINAL isn't necessarily final.

But AI changes the equation.

Most businesses can now buy access to broadly the same AI as everyone else. ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini. The technology will keep improving and access to it will keep getting easier.

What your competitors can't buy is your context. Your client history. Your decisions. Your processes. Your intellectual property. Your meeting history. Your templates. The accumulated knowledge of your organisation.

For the last few years, we have mostly given AI that context manually. Upload the document. Paste in the email. Explain the background.

The next step is AI being able to find the context for itself. That is when the old filing cabinet starts becoming something much more valuable.

This doesn't mean you need to sort out your entire IT environment before you start with AI. You don't. But as you move from using AI as a tool to giving agents access to organisational knowledge, the environment they enter starts to matter.

Especially the permissions. Before you unleash an AI agent on your file system, you need to understand who already has access to what. Those permissions may have accumulated over years, across teams, roles and people who have come and gone.

AI doesn't create that problem. But it can expose it at a speed and scale humans never could.

So start there.

Talk to whoever manages your IT environment. Pick one valuable information area and understand the permissions. Who can see it? Who should be able to see it? Which information is authoritative? What would you be comfortable allowing an AI agent to access?

Then start small and learn. You don't need to rebuild everything.

“The information you have spent years creating is about to become a real competitive advantage, if AI can actually reach it. Start getting it ready.”

Most businesses have years of context, history and decisions sitting in their systems. The AI Risk Snapshot shows you where that's an opportunity AI could use, and where it's a risk you'd want to sort first.
